Before you buy a fish
How do I know which fish suit my tap water?
Test pH and hardness once, then browse the collections for hard or soft water. Matching fish to your water is far easier than changing the water.
Why do some species say “keep 6 or more”?
Shoaling fish feel safe in numbers. Kept alone they can become stressed, hide or turn nippy — the group size is part of their care.
Can I keep different species together?
Often, if they share water and temperature needs and are peaceful. Check each profile’s temperament and tank-mate notes before mixing.
Care parameters, plainly stated.
Every species page gives the water, tank size and temperament a fish actually needs, with sources listed. Where a figure depends on the individual fish or your water, we say so.
